Apple talks to environmental groups about factories

Happening for the first time in history, Apple has been reported that the it held talks with five environmental groups who accuse Apple’s Chinese manufacturers of pollution.

The groups issued a report in August this year that alleged widespread pollution at dozens of factories that are believed to produce Apple products.apple

One of the campaigners, Ma Jun who is a director at the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, praised the talks as a “step forward” but criticised Apple for refusing to identify its suppliers in China, the AFP writes.

“Despite this they consider that the pollution from these 15 companies is a commercial secret. So we don’t know the names of the 15 companies and we can’t verify the steps they are making to curb pollution,” Ma said.

Apple did not comment on the meeting but did say it requires its suppliers provide safe working conditions and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.
