Your Mission Statement
The strategic planning process should begin with a mission statement that is clear, concise and articulates the company’s reason for being in existence. The first step that you should take is to review your company’s mission statement, and write a mission statement specifically for your HR department, detailing how it will support the overall mission of the organisation. For example, if your mission statement details how the company aims to provide the best possible services to its customers, the HR mission statement could address how the department will best support employees in achieving this.
It is important to develop a series of strategic objectives, which are goals that the company must meet in order to uphold their mission. These objectives are commonly articulated by strategic managers as the SMART goals method, which consists of goals that are Strategic, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and have a specific Timeline in relation to the mission statement.
You should identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of your HR department by performing a SWOT analysis or similar. This will enable you to understand the current situation of both your organisation and the HR department in relation to the desired situation. It is crucial that the HR department analyses elements such as organisational structure, employee development and key staff requirements.
Formulate a Strategy
You should begin to develop and formulate a strategy for meeting your objectives and closing the gap in between where your HR department is now and where you would like it to be. Typically, this will consist of developing policies and procedures which are specifically concepted to take advantage of the strengths and opportunities of the department whist combating its weaknesses and threats, such as the use of online HR software.
Implement the Strategy
