10 Questions You’re Afraid to Ask About Your Ink and Toner

Why do ink and toner cartridges cost so much?

Cartridges have many microscopic nozzles, viscosity and color applications. But manufacturers tend to “give away” their printers, and make their money on the ink purchases.

Will using recycled ink cartridges damage my printer?

No. These are fine to use. These cartridges are inspected and tested before being sold. The Ink Technologies blog has some great info on this. You can check  recent articles on the blog to learn more on how to care for your printers.

Can I use my cartridge after my “ink low” light begins to flash?

Yes. In fact the microchip inside the cartridge may be signaling you to replace it, with as much as 20% of its ink remaining. So keep on printing until you notice your print quality deteriorating.

Is using off-brand ink OK from my printer?

Compatible cartridges are normally of equal quality with better pricing. Visit Ink Technologies blog to learn more.

How long can I keep cartridges?

It depends on a lot of factors. Keep unused cartridges in a cool, dry, and dust free environment. With proper storage, they could last for a few years.

Where does all this ink come from?

The long history of ink making keeps evolving. The ink we write with is oil based–in fact 22% comes from soy oil. The ink for printers is either dye-based or pigment-based. Dye-based is used for colors while pigment-based is used for black ink.

Is it better to buy a printer with a single ink cartridge or multiple ink cartridges?

Studies seem to indicate that less ink is wasted with the multiple ink cartridge system.  Single ink cartridges can be thrown away when just one color from the cartridge is depleted.ink cartridges

Is it OK to shake my toner cartridge?

When you notice a clumping or uneven printing result on your printed page, remove your toner cartridge and shake it from side to side. This may redistribute the ink enough to even out the printing result. Ink Technologies blog adds more to this discussion.

I know I have a pretty full cartridge, yet it won’t leave ink on the page?

Sometimes after a period of non-use of the printer, ink and toner cartridges can dry up. Try running the cleaning routine of the printer first, and if that doesn’t get the ink flowing, then you can try a manual clean. Use a damp to wet Q-tip or a damp paper towel and rub it over the ink nozzle.

Is it important to recycle my old cartridges?

Yes. This will allow the cartridges to be reused and to help clean-up our environment.
We hope this answers some of your questions. Ink Technologies blog is another source of great ink information.
