Directly comparing the iPad mini with the Nexus 7 tablet
The two devices belong to the same class of smaller tablets, but they have their differences anyway, the iPad mini is nearly the same in height with Nexus 7, but Apple had made it wider and a little thinner than the Google product.
The bezel of the iPad mini is narrower on the side, a geek Apple uses to produce small form device, maintaining larger display.
The iPad mini is much lighter, but this doesn’t make it a disadvantage for the Nexus 7, but tablets can conveniently be handled with one hand.
Both tablets have a flaws and power in their display department, but in different dimension. Google has packaged a higher resolution with obvious powerful pixel density, but the iPad mini is 0.9 inch (22.9mm) larger for more display real estate.
When the processors of both devices are critically analyzed, Google Nexus takes the lead. Google Nexus is powered by a quad core Tegra 3 chip, but Apple has made the same A5 chip that came with the iPad 2 in 2011 to power the iPad mini.
Apple had probably made a 512 MB RAM on the iPad mini, like that in the iPad 2, but Google had been generous enough. Consider this a plus for the Nexus 7 over its counterpart.
Presently, the Google Nexus 7 has just the 8 GB and the 16 GB storage option in market, but there is rumor that Google is planning an event where it would unveil and replace the market with the 16 GB and 32 GB Nexus 7. Apple is offering more storage option on the iPad mini, far bigger than that of the Nexus 7 as at present.
The Nexus 7 offers just the Wi-Fi model as for now, but this is included in the rumor that Google will probably come out with a cellular data Nexus 7 at the same event. The iPad mini is offering the Wi-Fi only, as well as that that combines Wi-Fi with 3G and 4G.
We have not laid our hands on the iPad mini to see if what Apple has claim is true, but it has promised a 10 hour running time either on Wi-Fi, music or video, while Nexus 7 boasts of 10 hours web surfing and 9 hours video watching.
Here the iPad mini wins, Google with Asus had refused to add a rear camera on the Nexus 7, the only camera on the Google device is just 1.2 MP, but Apple had added a 1.2 MP front camera as well as a whooping 5 MP rear camera for quality image shooting. Forget the Nexus 7 when it comes to imaging.
Now let’s go to your Pocket
Many people may prefer the iPad mini because of the wealth of apps in the Apple Store, although, Google Play is not doing bad also anyway. Apple Store is so rich when it comes to tablet app and considering the fact that the iPad mini runs the same resolution as the iPad 2.
One thing that may bring the Google Nexus 7 to an edge is the pricing; the starting price is just $200, cheaper than the iPad mini with a whooping of $130 for the base models. if Google can achieve the rumored categories for the Nexus 7, even, Apple loyalist customers may be tempted to ignore the iPad mini for smaller tablets.
Apple had got a name to sell even when its product refuse to measure up to rival’s packages, another advantage the iPad mini may also be having over the Nexus 7 is the rich Apple app Store. Now, what should we expect?
Is the iPad mini better than the Nexus 7? The question is answered base on personal taste. When we finally lay our hands on the iPad mini by November 2, we shall try a clearer distinction between the two contenders.
