3 Concerns That Prevent Companies from Adopting Cloud Storage

Remember those paranoid holdouts before the internet became ubiquitous, the people who refused to shop online or use email because they didn’t trust it? A few of those folks may still be around, but, without question, our confidence in and acceptance of the internet has grown over the years.

A strong parallel to cloud storage exists in that progression. For a few years, not many people could explain what the cloud was, let alone have enough faith in the cloud to trust it with sensitive information. While the cloud has now become a household phrase, some companies still harbor concerns, albeit unfounded, about cloud storage security. Below are three of the most prevalent concerns and the truth that dispels these myths about cloud security.

Prevalent concerns that’s preventing companies from adopting Cloud Storage services.

Myth: Cloud Services Are Prohibitively Expensive

One often-cited reason managers balk at adopting cloud storage is the cost, which is a common misconception. Cloud services and technology result in net savings. Cloud storage eliminates the cost of expensive hardware. Most cloud services are pay-as-you-go models, allowing you to pay only for what you use and for as long as you use it.

Cloud storage adoption also frees up capital — human and otherwise — for a significant return on investment. In fact, a Manchester Business School survey of 1,300 companies in the United States and the United Kingdom found that 88 percent of cloud adopters reported cost savings, and 56 percent agreed that cloud storage boosted profits.

Myth: The Cloud Isn’t Secure

While hackers attempt to find new threat vectors by targeting cloud applications, cloud security technology and cloud access security brokers grow more advanced every day. Cloud storage is almost always more secure than local storage, eliminating risks such as theft, damage, and hardware malfunctions.

For example, lost laptops are a billion-dollar problem for businesses. The most devastating loss is not the laptop itself, but rather the information stored on the device that could easily fall into the wrong hands. With the secure remote access and control the cloud offers, you can view your data from anywhere, regardless of where your machine appears. Likewise, you can remotely wipe a lost laptop to avoid potential security breaches. Additionally, the cloud encrypts your data, so that only authorized users can view your information.

Myth: Cloud Storage Adoption Is Difficult

Another reason for managers’ reluctance to adopt the cloud is the alleged difficulty of transitioning from on-site storage run by an IT team to a third-party cloud provider. In reality, transitioning to the cloud relieves an IT team of the enormous burden of having to maintain a server and physical equipment. Adopting cloud storage service is quite straight-forward than you could ever think it is.

Speaking of transition, your cloud provider can walk you through every step of setup and integration, as well as provide training to your employees. Specifically, a cloud architect can help companies choose the proper scaling, installation, and provisioning. Once a company migrates data to the cloud, the information goes live in a matter of minutes, allowing employees access from anywhere in the world.

As you can see, the most commonly cited concerns about the cloud aren’t concerns at all. The truth is that the cloud can offer companies a smooth migration, cost savings, and tougher security features. But the question is, are these companies ready to embrace the change by adopting cloud storage facilities?
