Everyone who has an iPhone knows that it is part toy, part useful device that is great for getting things done in a pinch. Whether you use your iPhone more as a toy or as a utilitarian device, there is bound to be an excellent app that is so great that you don’t even know how you used to get by without it. Without further ado, here are some of the most-used, entertaining apps currently on my iPhone.`
Ocarina
While this app definitely goes under the toy category, it is by far the best pointless app I’ve ever used. It will impress your friends and family and keep you entertained for countless hours. Know that mystical, ancient flute that has something to do with the Legend of Zelda? Well now your iPhone can be that mystical instrument! Not only do you get to play on this legendary instrument, the developer’s site even gives you sheet music to your favorite songs!
Yelp
If you ever find yourself wondering if there are any good food places around you in the midst of an unfamiliar city, then Yelp would fit your needs perfectly. Not only can it show you restaurants in proximity to your location, it also has user reviews, and countless other types of business as well (hair salons, hardware stores, you name it). Yelp is definitely one of the most-used apps on my phone. I couldn’t live without it.
Shazam
This app is possibly a hybrid between entertaining in useful. Let’s say you’re at a party or club, and some incredible music comes on that you’ve never heard before. You’d really like to checkout whoever recorded the song, so you can peruse the rest of their discography and jam to it later while you’re at home. But alas, no one has any idea what the name of the song or artist is. Well Shazam does. It will record what you’re listening to and identify the artist and song, give you lyrics, let you purchase tracks on iTunes, and even find out if the artist is in tour or has a new album available. This is perfect for those with highly refined music tastes looking to branch out.
Evernote
This productivity workhorse is designed to help you remember everything. See something that would make the perfect gift for your friend or loved one? Snap a photo and save it into Evernote. Have a great idea, but can’t write it down while you’re driving? Record it on your phone and store it in Evernote to transcribe later. The best part about Evernote is that it stores your notes and pictures on their servers in the cloud, so you can access it not only from your phone but any other computer with internet access. Is there anything more you could possibly ask for?
Flashlight+
Perhaps the most useful of useful apps, the Flashlight+ app does exactly as its title suggests. And it does it well without any hassle or bugs that you might find in other similar flashlight apps. It essentially uses the flash of your camera to serve as a flashlight when you find yourself fumbling around for something in the dark, and the amount of lighting you can get form this app is surprisingly ample. Best of all, it has an easy-to-access battery level indicator that you can watch as your using it. After all, using the camera’s flash for an extensive period of time will take its toll on your battery.
