Monday night was the announcement of a new planet discovered, attributed to having Four Sun.
In the elementary science school when we were young, a planet was defined as a celestial body revolving round the Sun in the Solar system which we referred to as Universe or Space. Don’t you think I need a round of applause, because I am now in my thirties while coating a definition of about 23 years away? I wouldn’t forget that we were told that the number of planet we have in the solar system were Nine, and it got listed as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Earth, Neptune, and Pluto.
As science discovery moves on, scientist after the discovery of a new body around the Pluto argued that Pluto is no longer a planet, and this was officially announced in 2005 by International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Pluto was dropped from being a planet because it was found that the new planet called Eris discovered around it was bigger than it.
Actually, there are so much celestial bodies discovered in space that could have been called new planets, but when IAU came together, they agreed that before a body could be called a planet, it must fulfil 3 conditions;
- Orbiting round the Sun
- Posses enough gravity to compact themselves into a ball
- They have the capacity to clear away all other body from their orbit.
It was argued that Pluto has refused to fulfill these conditions.
More so, as at October 16 2012, 842 extra solar planets are known.
The New planet that has four sun systems.
The four sun new planet was discovered by Robert Gagliano, Ariz and Kian Jek. This is the first known planet with a quadruple-sun system. The new planet is suggested a gas planet that its radius is six times greater than that of the Earth, showing that Neptune is even smaller to it. Gagliano and his team member belong to the Planet Hunters Volunteer group of Yale University, an organization that allows the public to make reviews from the NASA’s Kelper’s telescope, astronomic data. The value of the microscope is worth $600 million, publishing its data to online public portals.
As they were reviewing the NASA’s information, the team discovered a deviation that shows that there is a new planet existing, and they named it, PH1 which means, Planet Hunters 1 as it is the first heavenly body the group will be discovering since inception. They found out that around every 138 days, a pair of eclipsing stars with 1.5 and 0.41 times bigger than the mass of the Sun are orbited by the PH1. A member of the Planet Hunters, named Debra Fischer, while reporting about the new planet refers to the discovery of Gagliano and Jek as a unique discovered that could have been totally missed out without the help of the sharps public eyes.
This new planet discovery was announced on Monday night by the Planetary Science of American Astronomers Society at an annual general meeting in Reno, Nev.
